I'm not gonna lie, when people said it was hot here I thought they were over exaggerating. They may still be, from what I'm told this heatwave is extremely uncommon for Yakima let alone Washington State.

Sadly for me, I've got a broken air conditioner and a bunch of fans, lucky for you, I've figured out five simple life hacks to stay cool during the Yakima heat. It shouldn't cost you a thing and it should help keep you cool during the miserable heatwave of a day!

A Cold Towel On Your Feet

Believe it or not we generate a lot of heat already, when the sun's beaming down on us it only gets worse. A place in your body that you generate and keep a lot of heat is in...you guessed it, your feet! If you ring out a towel in cold water then wrap it around your feet it can help decrease your body heat and relax the muscles in your feet. Just make sure once it warms up to your body temperature to take it off and re-soak!

Refrigerate your Sheets Before Bed!

One of my favorite tricks is throwing the bedsheets in the freezer an hour or so before it's time to go to bed. There's nothing worse than waking up in a pool of your own sweat or being stuck awake because you just can't cool down. If you stick those sheets in the freezer and put em on just before you go to bed you have a for sure way of cooling down your entire body and bed all at once. If you're feeling a little extra maybe throw your pj's in there too! What can it hurt?

Redneck Air Conditioner

Believe it or not, this is one of my absolute favorites, it cost me close to nothing and kept our living room cool for hours. If you're asking what a "red neck" air conditioner is, it's your best friend that you can make at home. What you need is a fan, a styrofoam cooler, ice, and a small steak knife. First, you'll cut a circle into the styrofoam cooler near the top, you don't want it to be too big or it won't get the job done, id shoot for about a 3-inch circle. Once you've done that dump a bag of ice or dumped a few of your ice trays in there, fill it up with a little bit of water, and then set your fan on top. making sure the fan is directly over the cooler you just flip that bad boy on and let it do its magic. The small hole will pull hot air from outside into the cooler where the ice will help cool it off before recycling it out into the room. This will cool off all the hot air and leave you wanting to make one for each room.

Fruit Water!

This one is easy, just freeze some of your favorite sweet fruits to start. Pour yourself a tall glass of water and then add the frozen fruits! When it comes to the heat staying hydrated is key, drinking a good amount of water will help keep you cool, adding the frozen fruit will give you some extra vitamins and give you a sweet treat at the end of your water. To keep staying cool just refill and keep drinking.

Home Made Frozen Yogurt!

No, you don't need a soft-serve machine to do this and you don't have to work at fro-yo either. All you need is one of your favorite yogurt treats from the store, throw it in the freezer, and 45 mins in pull it out. Find a stick you can put into the top to turn it into a popsicle. Put it back in the freezer until it's frozen solid and then enjoy! To keep from making a mess while you eat, take a cupcake wrapper, poke the stick you used to turn your yogurt into a popsicle treat it thru the wrapper, and enjoy!
